Module 2: Searching and locating references in the library

""The Library Catalogue

If you need to find a particular reference in the library, or to find a range of resources on a given subject or written by a particular author, you will need to use the UNSW Library Catalogue.

This a database of the Library's collection. It gives details of every item which is either held or electronically available via UNSW Library.

You should use the Library Catalogue to:

a. Author and Title keyword search Very useful for looking up references in a reading list, subject bibliography and known item searching.
e.g. Campbell, N.A., Reece, J.A., and Mitchell, L.G. (1999). Biology, 5th Edition. Menlo Park: Benjamin/Cummings.

Special tip for keyword searches: Truncation

  • Use the ? character to find matches that contain portions of words.
  • For example, gun? will retrieve gun, guns, gunners, gunnery, gunning, etc. In another example, ?ology will retrieve anthropology, archaeology, psychology, etc.
  • The ? character may also be used to find variant spellings. For example, alumi?m will find both the American spelling, aluminum, and the British spelling, aluminium.

 

b. Searching items on a Topic Use the topical keyword search when the Library Catalogue does not have a subject heading matching your searched term.
e.g You would like to look up books about laboratory report writing for psychology. The keywords for your search would be report writing psychology.

c. Finding journals: print & electronic Very useful for locating journal titles, specially for citations retrieved in electronic databases like PsycInfo, Medline, and Web of Science.
e.g. Troyer, A.K., & Craik, F.I.M. (2000). The effect of divided attention on memory for items and their context. Canadian Journal of Experimental Psychology. 54 (3), 161-171

When looking for call numbers and serials holding for a journal, click on the journal title to display the full record. Do not rely on the Year listed in the brief display.
