Sources of information

Two main types of information exist in the library:

• Monographs - a book or any individually published work.
• Serials - a publication that is produced on a regular basis, for example a journal, magazine or newspaper.

You may need to rely on both books and journal articles to gain a thorough understanding of the area of interest.

Other types of references that you may encounter include:

• Conference proceedings - refers to papers presented at a conference or seminar, or to the complete published papers of a conference or seminar.
• World Wide Web (WWW) - this is increasingly being used as a means of publishing academic information and you may find documents on the WWW, or websites relevant to your topic area. The credibility of such sources is varied, and you should try to use information from reputable sites such as government (.gov) or educational (.edu) ones.
